Individual Development Accounts
Individual Development Accounts are matched savings accounts designed to assist working low-income families acquire an asset. Southern University's IDA program is designed to assist low income families in purchasing a home for the first time. IDAs are based on the belief that asset building is the key to gaining economic self-sufficiency.

In order to be eligible to participate in the Louisiana Asset Building Initiative, a household must include at least on minor child. The family at the time of the application also must have some source of earned income and be at or below the financial eligibility guidelines.

     Eligible Applicants:
  • Complete a Savings Plan Agreement, opens a savings account and begin monthly deposits
  • Attend financial education classes and asset specific training classes
  • Required to make deposits to reach the maximum matched savings goal of $1000
  • Once all program requirements are met and a savings plan is achieved , the participant is ready to receive matching funds to purchase a home at a ratio of 4:1 for a maximum of $5000 ($1000 in savings and $4000 in match)
